A new solo exhibition by renowned Australian artist Alex Seton, titled A History of Forgetting, will be on display at Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre from Friday 11 February to Sunday 17 April 2022.

A History of Forgetting continues Alex Seton’s interrogation of the unreliability of memory, both personal and collective. For the artist, growing up in Australia is to be aware of the blank pages in our history books. Centred on the idiosyncratic memories of his own childhood growing up in rural NSW, the show is a deeply personal elegy to the place of his upbringing that grapples with the passing of time and the importance of bringing our stories to the fore.

The exhibition will include new and recent work, incorporating photography, video work and new marble carvings alongside an original musical work. The exhibition captures Seton’s deep love of his childhood landscape and presents poignant and often humorous reflections on the fallibility of memory.

Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM said: “The Gallery is thrilled to welcome artist Alex Seton back to the Gallery with his exhibition A History of Forgetting. Alex is an accomplished multi-disciplinary artist who is particularly well known for his marble carving and was the Gallery's inaugural Artist in Residence back in 2015. This new solo exhibition, created especially for the Tweed Regional Gallery, includes a combination of existing works and new works across diverse mediums that have never been shown before.”

Seton has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including significant solo exhibitions at Unit London, Goulburn Regional Gallery, Newcastle Art Gallery, Australian War Memorial, McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery and Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne.

In 2021, the Australian War Memorial awarded Seton the major Sufferings of War and Service commission. His large-scale installation For Every Drop Shed in Anguish will be launched in the Sculpture Garden in 2023.

His work is held in collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, Art Gallery of South Australia, Australian War Memorial, Newcastle Art Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery, the Danish Royal Art Collection, Copenhagen, and Alnoba Art Park New Hampshire, USA, and numerous other public and private collections.

Seton is represented by leading contemporary commercial gallery Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney and Singapore.
