Curtain Call
07 June 2018
Artist inspired by poetry, text and song
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear acclaimed Sydney-based artist Andrew Antoniou discuss his exhibition Curtain Call at Tweed Regional Gallery.
The exhibition features paintings, drawings and etchings by Antoniou, and relates to his immersion into the world of theatre, particularly that of the Absurdist movement. In this confined and constructed space we become focused on the drama of the human condition that is illuminated by unnatural light and given force by plot and characterisation.
The works explore themes of a theatrical nature, including time, mortality, love, ritual, conflict and notions of magic and transformation.
“I see and express these concepts through figuration (cast), spatial composition (stage set) and narrative flow (script). I work with the idea of a cast of characters and develop their roles in successive pieces to enable the viewer to see the possibilities of this approach in the telling of a story,” Antoniou said.
Born in the UK, Antoniou completed his studies in London and emigrated to Australia in 1986. He has exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, USA and UK and has work in major collections in the UK, USA and in Australia.
