A selection of work by Dean Home on display at Tweed Regional Gallery

Tweed Regional Gallery will present a series of new and recent paintings by Melbourne-based artist Dean Home in a new exhibition titled On a walk in the poet’s garden which is on display from Friday 22 March until Sunday 18 August 2019.

With a career that spans almost 30 years, Dean Home has created a distinct style that communicates his journey as an artist. His bold and opulent still lifes are carefully constructed and artfully balanced, with an added sense of drama and theatricality.

Tweed Regional Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM said the works in On a walk in the poet’s garden interweave within both the still life and landscape genres.

“Selected objects make an interior scene, but they can also be simultaneously read as landscapes, often literally on his featured trademark Chinoiserie,” Ms Muddiman said.

The artist said that one day he suddenly realised that an object could tell a story inside a story by providing a pictorial boundary.

While Chinese ceramics act as a vehicle for conveying stories, Home clarifies, “I am not making ‘Chinese’ art, I am interested in how this object is telling a story and playing its role in a spatial composition.”

Traditional Chinese vessels are poetically fused with the Western sensibilities of still life representation with a contemporary aesthetic in mind.

In this exhibition of current works, Home invites people to see “where some of these ‘genre-overlaps’, playing against my own pictorial iconography, has led me. I feel my journey to the orient, both real and on the poet’s page, has been very rewarding and has some distance to travel yet.”

Tweed Regional Gallery will be hosting a ‘Meet the Artist’ with Dean Home on Sunday 24 March from 2pm to 4pm (DST). Home will provide insights into his exhibition and artistic practice. Attendees are invited to stay afterwards for a drink in the Gallery foyer and the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the newly released book ‘Dean Home: An Artist’s Journey’.

Written by Ken McGregor and published by Thames and Hudson, the book traces the artist’s practice over three decades, revealing the complex formal and conceptual vocabulary driving Home’s mastery of the still life genre.

Dean Home is represented by Arthouse Gallery, Sydney; Gallery One, Gold Coast; and Metro Gallery, Melbourne.
