The Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence studio is an on-site, live-in studio available to visual artists living and working in Australia. The residency program encourages arts practice and creative engagement between artist, community and place.

Self-funded residency program

Artists are invited to apply to rent the Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence Studio. The program is subsidised, making the rental fee $380 per week (plus GST). There is no outcome exhibition or programming in relation to self-funded residencies.

Applications for self-funded residencies in 2024 and 2025 are now closed. 

Applications for self-funded residencies in 2026 will open 1 March 2025 and close 30 April 2025 at 5 pm.

Funded residency program

Funded residencies are supported through the generous benefaction of Mr Tim Fairfax AC and complemented by government grants and the Gallery’s support organisations. There is no open application process for Funded Residencies.

  • One funded residency per year occurs by invitation only. These residencies result in an outcome exhibition in the Friends Gallery.
  • One funded residency per year is allocated annually to a Master of Fine Art graduate from the National Art School. This is via a competitive application process open to National Art School graduates of Master of Fine Art, Painting. The Tweed Regional Gallery's partnership with the National Art School aims to showcase emerging artists in recognition of Margaret Olley, a National Art School alumnus. These residencies result in an outcome exhibition in the Friends Gallery.
